How Hydro Excavation Works

Water Loosens It. Vacuum Removes It.

  • Pressurized water breaks up the soilA rotating hydrovac nozzle cuts clay, sand and gravel without touching the line.
  • The vacuum lifts it into the tankSoil and water go straight into the debris tank, not into a pile next to the hole.
  • The utility is exposed and verifiedYou see the exact location and depth before anyone digs, bores or sets a post.
  • Heated water for frozen groundWe dig through winter frost across Minnesota and the Dakotas.

Hydrovac Trucks and Nozzles Built for the Job

Fast, safe digging comes down to the truck, the water and the nozzle. We run the same equipment our sister company sells and services.

Why Hydro Excavation

Safer Than a Bucket. Cleaner Than a Shovel.

One utility strike can mean an outage, an injury and a repair bill far bigger than the dig. Hydro excavation takes the guesswork out by exposing lines before the heavy equipment shows up.

  • Protects buried utilitiesWater and vacuum do not cut cable or crush pipe.
  • Smaller, cleaner holesLess restoration on lawns, streets and sidewalks.
  • Fast setup, year-roundHeated water and a boom that reaches over obstacles.

Questions

Hydro Excavation FAQ

What is hydro excavation?

Hydro excavation, or hydrovac digging, uses pressurized water to loosen soil and a powerful vacuum to lift it into a debris tank. It digs precise holes and trenches without the risk a backhoe or shovel brings to buried lines.

Why use hydro excavation instead of a backhoe?

Water and vacuum do not cut cables or crush pipes the way a bucket can. It is safer around gas, electric, fiber and water lines, disturbs less ground, and leaves a cleaner, smaller hole.

What is potholing or daylighting?

Potholing, also called daylighting, is digging a small test hole to expose a buried utility so you can see its exact location and depth before excavating, boring or setting posts.

Can you hydro excavate in winter?

Yes. We dig with heated water, so frozen ground in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota does not stop the job.

What nozzles and tools do you use?

Rotating hydrovac nozzles from Dig Pig and Hydra-Flex, including the Dig Pig Silencer nozzle and Titan lances, sized to the truck’s flow and pressure for fast, controlled digging.

What else can a hydrovac truck do?

Besides digging, we vacuum lift stations, catch basins, grain pits, valve boxes and structures, and locate and trace lines before you dig.

Do you haul the spoils away?

Yes. Soil and debris go into the truck’s tank and are hauled to an approved dump site, or back-filled on site if the job calls for it.

Where do you provide hydro excavation?

We are based in Kensington, Minnesota and hydro excavate for cities, contractors, utilities, farms and businesses across Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
